Hisani is a charity donation mobile app and website that allows users to donate food, money and clothing conveniently, attend events and volunteer for programs. users can schedule pickup for their goods when unable to donate personally.

The aim of this app and website is to unite people who want to help the needy and volunteer to charity programs and events across kenya.

Hisani is swahili for Charity

Background

In Kenya there are more than 800 registered orphanages, with an estimated 45, 000 children, many of these children lack basic things like food, clothing and decent education. We have many people who like to make donations however dont have the time due to their schedule or unable to donate due to a donation process that isnt seamless

Design an app and website that allows users to easily donate via multiple payment options,

schedule drop off and pickup for goods and track how their donations are being used for transparency

Minimize the user’s research process outside of the app through a user-friendly and intuitive interface that makes donating a simple process.

I conducted unmoderated user interviews through google meet with 10 participants between 20-65 years to understand their painpoints and needs. I also did secondary research to gain insights on the statistics and behaviours of how people donate

User Research

I looked at three competitors to have a look at potential strategies. highlighted some unique features as opportunity areas to add to the new design

Competitive Analysis

Qualitative Analysis and Market Research

To further understand user needs and behaviours, I interviewed 10 individuals to validate the idea for such an application and website. Each interview lasted about 15-20 minutes and included topics to get to the core of the user’s goals and pain points.

Interview Questions

Where do you typically go when you are looking to donate to a charitable organization or a looking for a volunteering program? ( Online/ Offline )

When donationg online, which platforms do you prefer?

What is the most frustrating thing about the donation processes you have interacted with before?

How frequently do you make donations?

What are some of the features that can be added to make a donation process seamless and improve the overal user experience?

Secondary research insights

In Kenya, we feature 346 confirmed charitable groups, with approximately 30% dedicated solely to the welfare of homeless children and their well-being

Records from 2005 show that the largest number of NPOs are Self-Help Groups, then Womens Groups,

much more numerous than the other categories.

The non-profit sector is a significant economic force in Kenya. In 2000, the sector accounted for about US$270 million in expenditure. This was equivalent to 2.5% of the

Gross Domestic product (GDP)

The Kenyan Nonprofit sector workforce is also smaller than those in other African countries which average 2.5 percent of the economically active population.

2.

Time due to busy schedules

Most users want a way to conveniently drop off goods or scheule pickups when they do not have time to personally visist the homes

3.

Final UI Design

ONBOARDING

AUTHENTICATION

The sign up and log in flow are seamless and straight to the point, with an option to sign up with a google account

Other Screens

HOMEPAGE AND DONATION FLOW

Main homepage with different categories; Programs, volunteers, campaigns and events

These screens show the step by step actions a user takes when they want to donate money. I wanted to make the process as short and precise as possible

Scheduling donation pickup

This was a very important project for me, as it was my fianl project for the google course. Throughout this project, I gained valuable insights and takeaways that have shaped my understanding of charity donations. Here are some personal ones:

Awareness is key: Many people are unaware of the various charities and causes they can support. It's important to provide accessible information to help individuals discover and learn about different organizations.

Trust matters: Building trust is crucial when it comes to charity donations. Donors want reassurance that their contributions will make a positive impact. Transparent communication and evidence of how funds are used can help establish trust.

Simplify the process: Donating should be straightforward and hassle-free. Simplifying the donation process and minimizing unnecessary steps or forms can encourage more people to contribute.

Show appreciation: Expressing gratitude and providing personalized thank-you messages can go a long way in making donors feel appreciated and valued. It reinforces their decision to contribute and encourages future engagement.

Impact updates matter: Donors want to see the impact of their contributions. Regular updates on how donations are making a difference can reinforce their sense of fulfillment and strengthen their connection with the cause.

International donations require clarity: When it comes to international donations, clear instructions and guidance are necessary. Simplifying the process, providing currency conversion tools, and ensuring compliance with regulations can make cross-border transactions smoother.

Conclusion and learnings

After completing the mobile UI designs, I also designed the website where people can come in, select donation programs and donate
