When Covid -19 hit the whole world, everything was at a standstill, lives were lost, people lost their jobs and means of livelihood and the whole world went into lockdown. Everything seemed fine at the beginning, working from home, social distancing etc. However as we moved into 2021, the third wave hit and it hit real hard. Last year many people suffered mental health issues like anxiety, depression, panic attacks, among others and this is mainly due to stress, not being able to communicate with family, friends, colleagues, therapists tc. The sad part losing loved ones to the pandemic and being uncertain of what the future holds

Background

Finding psychological help around the world is not an easy thing, most sessions are expensive and most people cannot afford it. Talking to family or religious leaders is out of the question as most of them are either biased or do not have the greater understanding to offer viable solutions. About 970million people suffer from mental issues and only one in four people can access mental heath care, as a result, many mental health disorders are attributed to a high number of deaths through suicide/self harm.

Understanding the Problem

This study seeks to create an app that can help any one battling mental health issues, that follows every confidential and security guidelines. This is a completely free app with therapists from all over the world offering their services to patients. In this app, you can schedule, chat and attend virtual sessions, there will be chatrooms , where members can connect with others , accessibility to free books, meditation videos, and podcasts with no in app purchases. Here it will also record your progress and help people make healthy life choices.

SwitchLife targets persons between the age of 18-50 who are interested in accessing mental health care services.

Proposal and Target Audience

Based on the insights from the research above, I created two personas for the project as seen below;

Who am I Designing For?

Design Process

Research & Analysis

Competitor analysis

At this stage we wanted to get a better understanding on how different applications work, how they offer support and the criteria they follow, so iwe went to google play store and searched for a couple of mental health apps. We looked through the overview, the UI, UX, user flow and most importantly the reviews, These are the few things that was noticed, The list includes the positive and negatives from the research.

Positives:

  • There are very many psychological applications to choose from

  • One or two offer completely free sessions

  • Personal chat support with an artificial intelligence system

Negatives

  • Poor design- Most are unable to understand the content offered

  • The paid services are too expensive, others often opt to chat with the AI which sometimes does not help much as the responses are automated.

  • Some forums do not follow confidential parameters ( most users preferred that their messages disappear after 24 hours)

  • Some people find that the therapist they are connected with are not a good fit and there is no refund policy

  • Most applications lose the progress history when a user changes their phones or logs out, this can be disheartening for some

The negatives overweigh the positives and our aim is to change that and below are some of the solutions

  • Better design and clearer user experience

  • Completely free services from therapists , no in app purchases

  • Curate the AI responses to match the users questions

  • More live sessions that follow confidential and security guidelines

  • Access to verified psychiatrist/therapists

After completing the storyboarding and creating a persona form there, It is clear who we are designing for. So I created hi-fidelity wireframes first so as to lay out the user flow and thereafter added the brand assets to create a uniques and pleasant experience for the users.

TAKING A SELF ASSESMENT

After the onboarding experience, the user is asked to take an assessment test to check how the are feeling before recommending a therapist

BOOKING AN APPOINTEMENT

The user can also schedule or book an appointment with a doctor. He can see his upcoming appointments in the schedule Tab. a detailed view of the doctors location and multiple contact options

OTHER SCREENS

Here the user sees a list of tools that can help his state of mental health e.g podcasts, books, vidoes and exercises. There exists a wide range of communities discussing different subject matters. A number of features that gives the user control are available in the ‘settings’
